The Republic of Somaliland is an unrecognised state in the Horn of Africa, recognised internationally as part of Somalia. It is located in the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden and bordered by Djibouti to the northwest, Ethiopia to the south and west, and Somalia to the east.

Filming in Somaliland is done throughout the year and the best time is during the Hagaa winter dry season from December to March. The heavy rain season runs from April to June. Jilal, the summer dry season runs from July to September. Dayr, the light rain season runs from October to November.

Somali and Arabic are the official languages. English is the most popular foreign language in Somaliland. It is taught in many schools across the country. Although Italian was the official language spoken in Italian Somaliland, after the independence of Somalia, the use of the Italian language in the country has greatly decreased.

The Somali shilling is the official currency. You should take hard currency, normally US dollars.

The situation in Somaliland remains volatile, exercise extreme caution, it is advised against travelling to eastern Somaliland. For visitors exercising caution and respect, Somaliland is a fascinating place to visit.

There is currently no tax incentives and rebates available to film in Somaliland.

Hargeisa is the Capital and largest city of Somaliland. It is located in the Marood Jeex region of Somaliland. It is also the major hub of Somaliland. Hargeisa International Airport connects the city with a variety of locations in East Africa countries and this is the best way to get to Hargeisa city.

Local landmarks and major filming locations include the Central Market (Suuqa Bacadlaha), Jama Mosque on the Independence Rd and the Livestock Market.

Visas & Work Permits for filming in Somalia

Somaliland’s visa policy constantly changes, visiting Somaliland is not the same as visiting Somalia, it is a completely different system. You will need to purchase a Somaliland visa to allow you entry. The Department of Immigration of Somaliland provides visas on arrival to a number of countries citizens.

If you cannot get the visa on arrival, the easiest way to get the visa is through the London, Washington or Addis Ababa consulates.
